Sleep Deprivation

Q: Are you getting any sleep?
A: A little bit. Sometimes. (but not at 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless Dave's mom or dad is here to do the "night shift." Their turns are saving our lives right now!)

Nursing

QUESTION: ARE YOU NURSING? HOW DOES THAT WORK?

ANSWER: Yes, I'm nursing, and yes, they take bottles, and yes, it's all my milk so far. Here's how it works: I nurse one baby and then follow that by pumping. So far I've been able to produce enough milk to feed all the babies for every feeding. So I nurse one baby and the other two take bottles, then I rotate who nurses and who takes bottles. Since they've been so little, their mouths don't suck very well when they nurse, and often we have to follow up nursing with a bottle, but it's important to me that they learn how to nurse. So even though it's a lot of work, I'll do it as long as I can! Of course as their needs grow I will have to start supplementing with formula, but at least this first part of their life is rich in momma's milk!

TRIPLET Q and A

I found a place that already exists for my Triplet Q & A. How convenient. I'm putting a link to it on my main blog. If you have questions about my babies or about being a triplet mom, feel free to leave a message and I'll get to it when I have a minute! Here are some questions I've already been asked:
1. Are your babies identical or fraternal?
Naturally we were eager to find this out. Each baby had her own sac and her own placenta, but I learned that if a cell divides in the first 2-3 days after conception each new embryo can develop their own sac and placenta. We were looking into how to do some testing on the babies, but the night they were born and taken into the NICU the doctors were running all their tests (which my babies passed with flying colors, by the way!) and they came out and announced to Dave that each baby had a different blood type! One has A+, one has O+, and one has O-. So they are all fraternal. I think I win the contest for egg-dropping.

2. Were you on fertility?
Just prayer and the will to conceive. And good fertility genes. I know, it's amazing. I'm a little in awe of this experience as well.

3. Do you get any sleep?
Occasionally. Dave's mom came and stayed the night for several nights the first couple of weeks and that made a huge difference. Dave's sister Sarah has come a couple of times as well has my sis-in-law Jamie. I do okay for 2-3 days of getting up at night and then I start to turn into an ugly green monster, so everyone appreciates the help when we get it!
